BARBARA SUE
FIELD
…the wind beneath our wings…
Mom’s greatest talent was her gift of love for everyone.
Mom’s dearest treasures were her family and friends. Your friendships enriched Mom’s life immensely
and she loved you all so very much;
we thank you for being
a very special part of her life.
Barbara Sue Bird Field
passed on after being ill for several weeks, back into the arms of loving family and friends, August 18, 2020, back to her folks, T.C. and her mother who passed when Mom was just a little girl, Charley / Dad and his mother, whom Charley’s mom and Barbara had a wonderful relation, and all Barbara’s long-time, very good friends, and just getting back to being her caring, giving, loving, beautiful, strong, courageous and thoughtful soul she always enjoyed being.
The only child to T.C. and Madge Bird. Barbara spent many of her young years raised in Santa Fe, New Mexico and traveling back and forth between families in Texas, Babs as she was known, the Texas cousins “little sister”.
Barbara married Charley on September 19. While attending school in Flagstaff, Barbara and Charley met in Flagstaff. Charley was doing forest road survey work around Flagstaff for a UofA survey class, while Barbara was attending classes. This was a bit of the classic girl in her dresses and boy in his jeans and t-shirt.
After a year in Tucson, both having graduated from school, they spent the next 10 years moving from California to New York and a couple places in between where Barbara taught grade school in each town and city. She touched the lives of many people, from so many children she taught in school to all her friends.
When they arrived in Phoenix 1969, Barbara, again began teaching in the Scottsdale Public School District and soon made many of her dearest friends. After a few years of teaching, she teamed up with Charley in the real estate business, adding a nice touch of organization, coordination, and social appeal. Once again, in real estate she became friends with many, many of their clients, many being repeat clients.
After they settled back into Arizona, they spent many Septembers in Flagstaff reminiscing the days with friends, enjoying the cooler end of summer/beginning of fall weather and all the town activities during their September 19 anniversary.
Barbara is survived by her grandson, UofA graduate, Naval Veteran, Thomas Charles Field, T.C., daughter, Lynda, Lynda Lois Field, and son, Scott, Charles Scott Field.
So, those we hold in our arms for awhile… we hold in our heart forever.
Our Mom’s, your friend Barbara’s, love and life will always be remembered.

We’ve so many fun memories going back years…golf, cabin time, dinner/bridge games….the list goes on & on. We have a photo collage on our bedroom wall at the cabin that Barbara made for us, so they’re never far from our thoughts & our hearts. I attended the baby shower for TC & we are both P.E.O.’s!!! I adored your grandmother, “Mom”. The list of wonderful memories goes on! Thank you & Lynda again for taking such good care of your mother & including me in these remembrances. With love & sympathy
~Mary Ann Thompson
We all loved her sweet heart. She and I were birthday twins and she made that special for me.

What a beautiful Celebration of Life for my dear and special friend, Barbara. Every adjective clearly described her life and how she lived. Her music, Bible verses and poems are some of my favorites, too. I felt so close to her with tears running down. I loved her so much.
Lynda , I remember you hopping into Concord School each morning with your Mother. Scott, I remember when you were able to be home alone after school, sitting in your back porch.
Life is a journey and these are memories I shall cherish forever. Life in Cincinnati with the Fields will remain in my heart forever.
May God bless you both this day and always, My faith tells me Barbara and Charley are together on this very special day.
My love, peace and comfort,
~Marina Pufpaff
GOD BLESS !!!!
Best wishes to all family members !!!!

Your mom’s passing has deeply saddened me. It is so difficult to lose your mom, but you will always have the beautiful and vivid memories she left with you.
Barbara was such a wonderful friend whose company I enjoyed so much at the Santa Fe High reunions, at other times Hank and I were able to visit with her and your dad, when reading the wonderful stories that brightened our days, and the Santa Fe updates she would send our way. The collage you sent is a perfect testament to her amazing and loving life. If Hank was still with us, he would have loved seeing it and the memories it would have brought back to him.
In closing, I wish you and your family the very best and love during this especially difficult time and in the future.
With Love,
~Gretchen Beers
Dearest Scott and Lynda, I’m so very sad to learn of Babs’ death. We are all broken-hearted. I last talked to her when Mother died. We remember her visits and she stayed in our home here in Austin. I think you did also Lynda. She was the apple of Mom and Pop’s eye and everyone else’s favorite. We have thought of her often but some how lost touch over the last few years.
We hold you in our thoughts and lift you up in our prayers.
Sending love and blessings,
~Mikey and Jim Herndon
What a shock it was to receive this e-mail. My wife (Joanne) and I considered Barbara to be one of our very best friends. As you may know, Barbara moved to Santa Fe when her father became superintendent of schools. I think that was about the 5th grade. From that time on she and I were very good friends. Even had a bunch of dates. We stayed close through college and then we went our separate ways. Fortunately we re-met Barbara and met Charlie at the high school 25th reunion. From the time on we were very good friends. We spent time with them in Arizona and they even went with us to a Santa Fe opera. After Charlie died we spent some wonderful times with Barbara in Arizona. We were so relieved when she was able to move in with Lynda. That was wonderful for her. Joanne and I had intended to call her since our grandson just entered college at Northern Arizona University. I know that Barbara spent at least one year there and we know she would have been interested in knowing that he had selected that university.
Thank you so much for your e-mail. I know that times are hard on you but I also know that she is in a much better place now.
~Bill and Joanne Kersting
I was terribly sorry to hear about your mother. She was one of my very best friends. I will never get over this loss. Even though I was only one year with her in college in Boulder, I knew then what a wonderful person she was. I will truly miss our conversations. Thank you for telling me about this.
~Betty Oldenburg
I am sorry to hear your sad news. Your mother and I shared several years of P.E.O. together when we lived in Green Valley…she was quite a lady and hostess and officer. My sympathy to you both…
~Marcia Garland
It is with a sad heart to learn of Barbara’s passing. Barbara was a gracious lady, proud but humble P.E.O. sister, and Christian friend to so many.
My sympathies to the family during this difficult time.
Hugs and prayers,

I am so very sorry to hear that Barbara has passed on and really appreciate you letting me know. She was truly one special lady and PEO Sister. We met in Green Valley and bonded very quickly. I will keep great memories of her in my heart. Yes, she was a true organizer and a very special friend.

So sorry to learn of Barbs passing. She was a wonderful, lovely lady and a friend who was dear. She made such a contribution no matter where she went. She was always welcome wherever she was and will be truly missed. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. I loved looking at each photo. Brought back so many great memories. Thank you for sharing this! Warm Regards,
~Lynda Neely
For many years she taught there with me at Mohave. When the great numbers of children began to diminish after booming when so many homes were built in what we called the ’40 square mile area’ our school needed to reduce the number of primary classrooms. Barbara, being the teacher with least seniority, would be needing to move. She could apply at the other schools in the district..so I told my father (who was principal of Tonalea School) that he really should hire her as she was a great teacher and he would love her as would the kids. He did so quickly and she taught for him for many years. Sometimes she had to change to another grade level as the population fluctuated, but she did and could handle any grade. Daddy always placed her on his list of wonderful teachers and it was at the Field’s home that they had a lovely Retirement Party for my father when he retired from Tonalea. He had been hired in 1958, as its first principal, and retired from there in 1974.
For many years, Barbara and I shared our Birthdays! On her Birthday I would have them over for dinner, and on mine, she would do likewise. I seem to remember that on Bill’s or Charlie’s that we would do that or go out to dinner together. Their birthdays were so close together, the 4th and 5th of February.
It was Barbara who had invited me into Chapter D, P.E.O. and I knew nothing of it, but thought if Barbara thinks it is good, surely I will too and I quickly accepted their invitation.
It was Barbara, too, who knew that Bill did excellent work and was honest and dependable and who recommended him to the President of Phelps Dodge when he wanted some work done on the home he had bought through Barbara. This turned into many great associations with the PD folks who were transferred from the East. They all trusted him and would give him the key and go back home and let him get it ready for them. It was a great boost to his work and wonderful that she, and they, trusted him so much.
She lives on in my heart and I have only lovely memories of her. She was, I think, the only woman (other than my mother) that I can honestly say I don’t remember her ever saying an unpleasant word about anyone! I am not able to aspire to that sainthood, but she truly was the epitome of kindness and grace.
May God bless her beautiful soul and I am sure she and Charlie and Bill and my mother and father and many of her friends are smiling with joy seeing her among them again.
Wishing you, dear Barbara, Heavenly joy!
~Cerelle Bolon
I am so sorry to hear of Barbara’s passing. We have lost a special soul. Thank you for letting me know. Perhaps you are unaware she and my husband David went to school together and maintained their friendship over many decades. She was so supportive of both of us and especially me after David died. I’ll miss her terribly as will you. I’m so glad she got to move closer to you and was able to share family closeness till the end.
A loved ones crossing always leaves a terrible hole in our lives but Barbara left a beautiful legacy of kindness and love to so many people. May happy memories of her bring you peace. My thoughts and prayers are with you.
In love and light,
~Elaine Reitzel
