Cozy fireside evening patio…as promised a few weeks ago, even last spring, planning for that sweet spot in your desert garden of a small, cozy, intimate patio space is here…yea October evenings…at least in Phoenix, Tucson, and similar climates. The evening nights are chillin and getting more and more perfect to cozy up near a small fire pit or chiminea, soft lights above, your favorite drink, your favorite person, family, to melt away the day. And, while this is about design, it’s also about your health & wellness.
Create Memorable Experiences
So, if that cozy patio space hasn’t been created…no problem, we have a fun DIY weekend planned for you. And, come Sunday evening you’ll be chillin on your new patio.
In October, I visited the Desert Botanical Gardens recently, and snapped the above photo as a visual sample. This is one of the small patios designed in the gardens. And, while we may be thinking back gardens, backyard, creating a small patio like this off your front door, in your front yard creates a whole other experience of interacting with neighbors walking in the evening. So, whether you have the natural desert as a backdrop or a 6’ wall, a bunch of plants to machete through, or a blank landscape canvas, something like this can be your retreat. Either way, all you need is a space that’s 10’ x 10’, 12 x 12, in the morning with coffee, meditation, yoga, afternoon and a book, evening fireside conversation with your favorite friend(s) and family, kids love this family stuff. Give yourself another 100, 150 square feet of living space.
Inexpensive Materials
Inexpensive elements, materials, furniture, lighting; find yourself some refurbished pavers that look as though they’ve been in the ground for years. The large tree, this being a Mesquite, acts as a focal piece, creating shade through the seasons. Add a couple chairs, a small table, plants framing the sides to create the boundaries of the space, (plants being drought tolerant, hummingbird and butterfly flowering plants) hummingbird feeder, 2, 3 accent planters, pots that vary in size and color, add a small fire pit or chiminea, and a couple strands of soft lighting…sweet. The following week, add an element of water, for sound…boom, done.
And as always, the Desert Botanical Gardens, as well as your local nurseries are great places for ideas. I’d love to see photos of your spaces in a couple weeks!
