Mexico and Our Travels
Mexico has been a good, good country to travel, journey around and explore these past few months, late 2020, early 2021 and into 2022. Typically, over nearly 40 years of visiting Mexico, and actually a town or resort, from Arizona, we stay for the week, a couple times stretching it to 10 days before we have to get back to the office, such as our trek to a resort in Playa del Carmen. This time around we are exploring towns and villages for two, four, six weeks at a time…awesome!
Summering in Portugal
Our original plans were to summer in Portugal, June-August, 2020, then a month, possibly 2 months in Croatia and back home the 1st of November. This itinerary would have us home to visit with family over the holidays, spend another 3-4 months in Arizona, and then prepare for travels over the next 4-6 months from May through October.
As many of you know, we had a fantastic time in Portugal those 3 months, (highly recommend), exploring Lisboa, Sintra, up and down the Algarves…or actually, back and forth as travel in the Algarves from town to town is actually east and west, and then up and down the Silver Coast between Lisboa and Porto. And, we loved our time in Split along the Adriatic Sea…beautiful, beautiful, beautiful.
As we were hanging out in Croatia, we made the decision to take care of a couple necessary medical treatments for Joanie in November and December. It was a matter of spending another month exploring in beautiful Croatia or taking care of some of the medical treatments by the end of the year versus over the summer of 2021. So, Joanie’s research on medical tourism had us traveling to Malaysia or to Mexico where medical practices are some of the best in the world and at much more affordable prices then in the United States. Come the end of October 2020, Malaysia was shutting down again, however Mexico was open at levels 2 and 3 in various parts of the country. So, we departed Croatia at the end of September 2020 and flew into Cancun for the weekend (ahh magaritas), and then to Guadalajara.
Guadalajara
Through a medical tourism company, called Pulse Protocol, Joanie was able to schedule both surgeries with the same Doctor, at a private hospital, in November and December, Guadalajara. January was spent recovering, and we got to do that in Puerto Vallarta.
Guadalajara, as you may know, is the 2nd most populated city in Mexico, some 5 million people, a bit more than Phoenix. Guadalajara is a good city to visit with hundreds of years of history and culture, the cathedrals and churches, the museums, the restaurants and cantinas, the weather/climate year round is good at it’s 5,000 feet, and the nearby places to tour, all very good. And, the people are very friendly. You need to speak Spanish. And in speaking Spanish, at least trying to, the Guadalajaran’s are very helpful and are very friendly.
Puerto Vallarta
It’s no wonder so many people travel down to Puerto Vallarta. Our month in Puerto Vallarta was fun. You could easily spend 3 months in Puerto Vallarta with all the places and activities. Though we were a bit in recovery mode, we did get to explore a few popular areas. One of our favorites was the Romantica Zona, at the southern part of PV. The Romantica Zona is a lot of fun with shopping, excellent food, drinks, great restaurants, many right along the beach, music, and of course the beautiful beaches and backdrop hills. It’s a favorite of the LGBQT community and the snowbirds. This is the area Liz and Richard hung out back in the day…Taylor and Burton.
Another favorite area in Puerto Vallarta was Marina Vallarta, and a whole other really good vibe. You, of course, have all the boats in the marina, then just a great place to bar hop, fun music along the way, good, fun restaurants, along with good accommodations right there, from condos to hotels/resorts and close to the beach.
In the next couple months, and with some of the new business expansion Joanie and I are working on, we’ll write about our travels in Mexico after Puerto Vallarta, and travels beyond.
So, our first lengthy journey in parts of Mexico has been really good. There is no question as to why millions of Americans from the U.S. and Canada have come to visit Mexico. Health with us, we are looking forward to spending more time exploring Mexico over the next couple/few years.
Stay healthy and safe…ciao.
