What are stem cells?
Asking the question, what are stem cells, well, it’s a little complicated, as they are only the cells that determine you from birth. However, in short, stem cells are young cells. And, they have been somewhat controversial.
Stem cells are your master cells. They divide and become daughter cells. Then stem cells differentiate into other cells, such as blood, bone, brain and heart. One type of stem cell is the umbilical cord stem cell, and a second are adult stem cells also known as mesenchymal stem cells. Two main purposes of stem cells are to reduce inflammation and increase regeneration of new cells.
Pulse Protocol is an industry leading platform that connects expert Surgeons and Physicians in Stem Cell Therapy with clients within the medical tourism industry in stem cell therapy, as well as other medical surgeries and procedures.
Umbilical Stem Cells
Human umbilical cord stem cells are ethically obtained, inexpensive and available. Umbilical cord vein, Wharton’s jelly, placenta/amniotic stem cells are diverse potent cells able to proliferate and differentiate into many cell types. Umbilical cells are superior and are more diversified than adult stem cells.
Umbilical stem cells have a high ability to self renew and replicate long term, unlike other cells. These few cells in a lab can be directed into producing a higher volume of specialized cells. For example, stem cells can be differentiated into blood cells that can be grown further in the lab and those cells can treat a Leukemia patient. This stem cell therapy for Leukemia and Lymphoma has been used for 30 years.
Mesenchymal Stem Cells
Mesenchyme is a type of tissue derived from loose cells of protein and fluid. Mesenchyme tissue gives rise to bone, cartilage, connective tissue of the circulatory and lymphatic systems. Mesenchymal stem cells are typically adult stem cells found in bone marrow and gonads. However, mesenchymal stem cells can be isolated from other tissues such as cord blood, fallopian tube, peripheral blood, fetal liver and fetal lung. Mesenchymal or adult stem cells differentiate into fewer cell types than umbilical stem cells.
Stem Cell Therapy
Stem cell therapy is the use of stem cells to replace damaged cells. Injected stem cells follow inflammatory indicators from diseased tissue then repair and regenerate these tissues. Stem cell therapy can treat certain chronic conditions, anti-aging, infertility, and autism in children, to name just a few treatments.
An adult patient receiving stem cell therapy will be treated as an outpatient. Treatment is one day, as IV therapy, with light sedation. The procedure is not painful. Typical side effects can include headache, fever, fatigue, and nausea. These tend to be mild however, and may last a day to a few days. Patients may need more than one treatment, depending on their condition. Positive results can be seen in as little as two weeks post treatment with progressive improvement over time. Patients can resume normal activity the next day, while strenuous activity should be held off for a couple weeks, again depending on one’s condition.
